Flights of Fancy
Curtin Shopping Centre Public Artworks
Curtin, ACT
1999 (Stage I)

Flights of Fancy celebrate the array of native bird life that find habitat and breathe colour and character into the suburbs of Canberra, fostered by the bushland corridors that form part of the city’s unique planning.

Commissioned by the ACT Government, Canberra Urban Parks and Places. Matthew Harding and Kate Ward collaborated to regenerate the Curtin Shopping Centre public spaces. Combining Matthew's skills as a sculptor and Kate's design sensibilities, they created Blue Wren play sculptures, laser cut and powder-coated steel banners, bin surrounds & drain grates; printed textile banners; glass mosaic, glazed terracotta and concrete seating pedestals; sandblasted terracotta and cast bronze feather paving insets.
