Emperors New Clothes
Goulburn Regional Art Gallery
2003

Three kimonos woven with fine monofilament, using a pocket weave which contained treasures collected during a study exchange program between the Australian National University and the Kyoto Seika University in Japan.

5 yen coins represent tokens of friendship and good luck; origami folded paper cranes refer to the story of 'Sadako and 1000 paper cranes' based on a Japanese legend that anyone who folded 1000 paper cranes would be cured by the gods; and wish or fortune papers that are purchased at Japanese temples and tied to trees.

Emperors New Clothes was the result of a research grant from ArtsACT to restore a jacquard loom and investigate weave structures.
